I need some serious advice here....please listen to my soap opera life, i need somesone to talk to..

hi, my name is sheri and i'm 22 yaers old. I ran away from home when i was 13 yaers old, and i got hooked on drugs. i've been to rehab twice. but this past time i relapsed, i did it on my own!!

i guess wanted it bad enough.well, all i know how to do are the old fashioned things that wemon are supposed to do.[cook, clean, and try and raise my son. (he's 20 months)] anyway's, i got sober my 35 year old boyfriend hasn't kicked the habbit yet.we live with his mother. she pays for every thing. i try to help out as much as i can, cooking and cleaning the house, i try to work for her and put in my part, well because i ran away so young, i became homeless addicted to crack cocaine, here in miami, fl. i say that because i havn't seen nor even herd from any one in my family in almost 10 years. i have god, and the greatest gift i could ever recieve, my son. my boyfriend's abusive to me. physically, emotionally, mentally. i want to face my fear and go out on my own. i'm scared.

what do you sugest

What you are afraid of is the same thing we all are afraid of....the unknown. Get out of there....if you have to go to a homeless shelter, just get out of there. You will never get your life back on track as long as you are with him. And you deserve a better guy.

get your son out of that abusive atmosphere as soon as possible.

perhaps visit your family, ask for help, or get a job anywhere, doing anything, just don't expose your son to drugs and violence
Get out of there %26amp; trust God to help you!
Get out of there! If not for you for your son. By leaving you may end up saving his life!! Best of luck and stay strong.
For your sake and the sake of that baby get away from your bf...Go home I am sure they are missing you terribly...If not for you then do it for your son..Just because you don't know them doesn't mean your family doesn't want to know your son....Leave before it's too late
well, honestly i think your strong enough to go out on your own. you or your son don't need the abuse around. i think you need to take a stand in your life. and do the right thing.
Sheri, Wow! It really sounds like you've had a rough life and I would like to say I'm sorry you had to endure all that you have. However, do you want your son to experience that same kind of life. I mean if your boyfriend is still using and being abusive to you that is not the type of environment to raise a child. You stated that had God and honey that is all you need. Pray and ask God for guidance and I promise you he will not mis-guide you. Look at all his done for you this far. I mean you're living in a home with man is addicted and you have been able not to use. Please stop thinking of your fears and begin to think about your son, he deserves a life without drugs and without abuse.
Id say leave your deadbeat boyfriend, get a job as a waitress. A waitress is a job that ANY woman can get, no matter age, background, qualifications. Its a start.
ohh boy u sound that ur serioiusly in a bad condition.. well this is lil advise u can have.. try to stop on drugs.. think of ur son.. wat will he do if sumthing happens to his mother.. about ur husband.. if u can run away from home.. n lived on ur own.. why cant u run away if he is abusing u? its bad for u n ur son's health.. try to find ur parenst back.. i bet they will still wanting u back in thier life.. n still waiting for u.. i just hope u can keep on ur faith and be strong in ur desicion.. 2 lives is in ur hand. urs and ur son ... so i hope ur ready for it

u go gal!!!
it's never too late to start a new life...think about your son if you will raised him with that kind of atmosphere...remember that you should love yourself if you want changes in your life...Please have all the means to contact your family...they will surely help you...give your life a break...leave your man...and ask for God's guidance to give you more strength and the wisdom to get all through the hard times...God is waiting for you...talk to Him and have faith...God Bless You!!!!
GET OUT OF THERE or ur son will become abusive and maybe a drug addict even tho he is so young this is the time babies develop words and copy wat they c for example daddy hitting mommy they might copy that and u will divorce ur husband later so u should do it now because if the child can remeber it it will affect the child emotionally, until they are grown, and u r now old enough to go alone or u could go back to ur family who probaly think the worst after ten years of complete absencene, giving them hope will be great so i would stay there let them ketchup on the past ten years of ur life and everything or u could since u r now a legal adult move into an apartment and get a job and pay for daycare but for just a while cus from age 1-4 that is when children make bonds and stuff and if u arent there that is wat the whild will remeber, not c-ing u so i wish u the best of luck
You sound like you are trying really hard to get it together. You owe it to yourself and your son to stay on the right path. If your boyfriend is 35 and still living at home and doing drugs...it is unlikely he will ever amount to much and he's not treating you right to boot. As your son grows he will learn that it is okay to treat women badly because that is what he sees. You don't want that do you?

There are many agencies that can help you get out on your own. You may even qualify for tuition help to go back to school and learn a trade. For instance I went to Medical Assisting School and now own my own home in California. It just takes will and determination.

Try Catholic Charities

WEAVE (Woman Escaping A Violent Environment)

Contact your local community college and set an appt. with a counselor who can hook you up with options.

Talk to a pastor of a local church.

Try Narcaholics/Alcohols Annonymous or Alanon

As scarey as it seems, maybe you should try and contact your family. I don't know what brought you to run away but if they were generally good people they are probably hoping that someday you will contact them. So give it a shot.

Stay strong...you can do it.
Hello Sheri. Firstly, sorry about your messed up life, drugs, running away, abusive boyfriend who still uses. This is no environment for you OR your son. What is your fear? Your fear that your boyfriend will chase you? Your fear of going out on your own? Do you have access to Women's Shelters where you live? Or Lifeline? Or any other form of assistance? Maybe counselling is also the way to go given your horrific past. As a teenager we all think we know everything. Do you know where your family lives? Try contacting your parents. This will be a big step for you. And you have the most important gift in your life .... GOD. Pray to our Lord Jesus that all will be OK, hand this problem over to Him and listen for an answer. He will guide you, He won't let you down. I certainly wish you luck on your journey from this moment on. When you are ready there are many beautiful men out there.
My heart goes out to you. First, have you tried contacting your family? If you haven't, you should. What do you have to lose? What about a friend you can stay with? And a last resort...there are shelters for battered women. I live in Cali., but I know they have those shelters all across the nation. There are most likely programs that can assist you as well. Through a type of welfare program, they can help you go to school, find a job and even pay for a daycare. Most of all, you need to get out of that environment, for you and the baby. You are clean, you need to stay that way for your child. And for yourself....don't stay with a guy who is abusive. In most cases, it only gets worse. and if he is still on drugs, he is a very volatile personality. Listen, it's scary....but so is the situation you are in now. You can do it on your own and there are places that can help. Get a phone book and start looking and calling. You'd be surprised at the people who are willing to direct you in the right direction. You are so young. Don't waste your life, or endanger it or your baby's. You can do it!! Have faith in yourself and it God. Remember that you truly NEVER walk alone and you really do have the power it takes to change your life...you just need to believe it!!! Good luck to you...peace and God bless you and your baby!
I am so sorry for you baby....not only for the condition you have put yourself on, but also for your inability to think and get out of it....

You left home when you were 13.....you did drugs.....went to rehab....strated all over again...now have a baby.....a good for nothing boyfriend...and you are still confused.....i wonder what made you have the child in the first place...what did he do wrong in his previous life that he is blessed with such a loving %26amp; caring parents.

The only way you can fix it all right is repeating your history once again....just take off may be right now...exactly the same way you took of when you were 13....nobody should be able to get you...head north (Just a suggestion)...but this time do everything right....

I was a drug addict for 8 Yrs....i kicked the habit overnight...without rehab or help.....just threw the bud one day and said this cant be my weekness....there is more to life then just being selfish....

Dont be worried bout this world - if you have the heart to face it then this world will definetely welcome you....rest all will be taken care by God...

P.S. - Dont think of going back home....mostly it gets worse...its better if you shape up your and most importantly your kids future...

My Wishes be with you...
This may not make a sense to you now but I think you must visit www.artofliving.org, look for the center in your area and place you faith on the course they conduct. It works and you will have a family to be with!! Do write back to me in case you need more information.

In the X Files, what song is it that plays near/in the later series (like near the end of TrustNo1)?

It plays in a few other episodes too, but I'm not sure which ones exactly. It's got a woman's voice singing in the background sorta like an opera-type style. There's no lyrics, just the woman singing in a melancholy way. It plays when Mulder is gone/"dead"/disappeared and somewhat represents Scully's sorrow (I dunno, that's what it sounded like anyway. I like the song but I don't know what it's called or where to find it. Curse my x-files addiction. Anyway...

The last episode that I remember it in is near the end of Trust No 1.

She's gonna pack her bags

She's gonna find her way

She's gonna get right out of this

She don't want New York

She don't want L.A.

She's gonna find that special kiss

She don't want no sleep

She don't want no high

Oh, like peaches 鈥榥' cream

She's gonna wish on stars and touch the sky

Ah, you know what I mean

She wants a good time

No need to rewind

She needs to really really find what she wants

She lands on both feet

Won't take a back seat

There's a brave new girl

And she's comin' out tonight

She's gonna step outside

Uncover her eyes

Who knew she could feel so alive

Her M.O.'s changed

She don't wanna behave

Ain't it good to be a brave girl tonight

Tonight, it's alright

A brave girl tonight

So she met this man

He was kinda rough

He said, girl, whatcha lookin' for

She said, I don't know

I go with the flow

He said, let's get on the floor

He said, you look real cute with your low ride jeans

And your pink little baby tee

Let's get a room, girl

Come and ride with me

She wants a good time

No need to rewind

She needs to really really find what she wants

She lands on both feet

Won't take a back seat

There's a brave new girl

And she's coming out tonight

She's gonna step outside

Uncover her eyes

Who knew she could feel so alive

Musical Interlude:

Stronger than we know (English):

Take a journey to find your dream

It's not as far as it may seem

Everyday is another step

So don't get down if you're not there yet

When things get worse than they've ever been

You'll find the strength that you need within

So don't give up 'till you find your dream

No matter how hard it may seem, yea

And to yourself you must be true

'Cause it's the only thing you can do

So when it's tough just don't let go

'Cause we're all stronger than we know

And as we go through the crazy things

That's the way we're gonna find our wings

So when its' tough just don't let go

'Cause we're all stronger than we know

Stronger than we know-oh-oh-oh

Yeaaa...

Life is full of impossibilities (stronger than we know)

You can be one too if you believe (stronger than we know)

We're all stronger than we know-oh-oh-oh

Yeah I know this guy called Dwight Shrute hes a funny dude.

yup i looove it! im like a fly on the wall always
yep, but there not trashy
Yes, I know her entire Life Story.
i'm one of those people lol!!!
I have more than one trashy co-worker. They always talk smack about the other girls, including me, in the office.
Used to have a co worker...we called him curious george. He was a single man aged 45. Had a comb over and everything. Always spoke about his conquest the night before...lying obviously...that guy always slept alone.
Yes, apparently, but I don't listen...I just walk away. For one, I have better things to do. Secondly, it probably IS a soap-opera...mostly made-up. People who talk like that usually fabricate most of the account anyway for attention.

Life's too short. Go on with your own business.
When I WAS working there was one girl, and everyday it was something else. People would actually run when they saw her coming after a while. We all got tired of listening to her whine about her unfaitful boyfriend. DUMP HIM ALREADY! JEEEZ! DUH!
Well the person is not trashy but her life is ,HMMMM ,a soap opera indeed lol

I sooo agree. My neighbor came over and yelled at me when I was playing a C.D. at my house with my friends over and it was only, 7:30 or so. She said she was trying to sleep, and I was like, "WHAT?!" I mean, normal people don't go to bed @ 7.

I would check with local authorities for noise ordinances and times, it may be an isolated preference of music. They may not like you and/or your music. I would keep cool and collected and try to resolve this peacefully and as an option, if you are so inclined, a possible resolve of voiding out your lease early without penalty.
Life is never fair from the mouth of a stubborn person. Stop crying about it, I'm sure the volume at which you listen to your music is not the same. Quit crying and move out if you don't like it there.
people have gotten sued for blasting music.

go tell an official or someone about it.

Can you manipulate your vocal weight to create a lighter or a more dramatic voice?

Like Whitney Houston, she can control and manipulate her vibrato, like speed it up or slow it down depending on the emotion she wishes to convey. But that's VIBRATO. What about VOCAL WEIGHT?

Are there any singers, esp opera singers, who can manipulate their vocal weight to give that sense of more lyric or more dramatic voice? Like they can make their voice darker and bigger when they sing dramatic pieces, yet they can also make it lighter and sweet-sounding when they do lyrical pieces?

And I don't mean manipulate your vocal weight as in BELTING or PUSHING your voice beyond your natural singing capacity thus creating a strain to your voice (coz it can damage your vocal chord). What I mean is a NATURAL singing voice that is so flexible and versatile that it can change its weight easily without any strain %26amp; flip-flop between the heavy big singing voices to light lyrical voices back %26amp; forth effortlessly.

Could there be such a thing? Are there any opera singers (or any singers, for that matter) who have that sort of quality in their voice?

Can you manipulate your vocal weight to create a lighter or a more dramatic voice?greek theater

It is possible, if you have a huge voice to begin with, to sing quietly. I mean, I've known people who sing opera and also work with children (teaching them children's songs and rhymes) and they don't use their full head resonance to sing in a classroom.

Dietrich Fischer-Diskau

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietrich_Fi...

is a renowned lieder singer, which requires great delicacy, but he also sang the role of Wotan in Wagner's 'Das Rheingold'. Not to suggest that Wagner doesn't require delicacy, for of course it does, but it does requires far more power to fill an auditorium than a living room (which was the original venue for lieder singing). Some would perhaps say he didn't have the 'oomph' for Wagner...

Then, of course, there's Bryn Terfel, who sings just about everything under the sun from Opera to Lieder, Art Songs in English, and bits of musicals as well. And he definitely doesn't sound the same singing Wotan as he does singing lullabyes.

I don't know if Maria Callas could accomplish what you are speaking of, but she certainly could manipulate her voice more than any other opera singer that I have ever heard.

You can check her out on You Tube, in many different types of arias.

Operatic duet for a tenor and soprano?

My friend and I were asked to sing at a showcase. We were hoping to sing a duet from an opera. We are fans of Mozart especially, but we would really like something comedic and light, that still shows off our voices, which are very operatic.

He is a lyric tenor, I believe he is most comfortable below and A or so. I am a light lyric coloratura, and I feel most comfortable above an A. (haha, a bit of fach humor there.)

Any suggestions would be appreciated. We're really open to anything and we're hoping to have a great time singing together to find something.

Perhaps "O soave faniculla" from La boheme could work.

Or "Tornmai a dir che m'mami" from Don Pasquale (by Ruffini) (it's short, though).

"Libiamo ne' lieti calci" from La traviata by Verdi (though I think it calls for a chorus)

Operatic duet for a tenor and soprano?concert tickets opera theater

You could try the tenor and soprano duet from the Bach Mass in B Minor - yes, I know it's not opera but it's a nice piece.
The duet 'Bei Mannern' from Mozart's Magic Flute. Quite light, not comedic I'm sorry, but otherwise might be just what you are looking for.
What about the Don Jose/ Micaela duet from Act III of Carmen? It's not comedic, but probably light enough to suit both voices.

If your tenor is up to the fireworks, there's a lot of bel canto duets just waiting- right now the Elvira/Arturo duet form I Puritani springs to mind, but far from comedic....

An old chestnut to fall back on, neither high nor very coloratura is Rossini's Cat Duet. You can camp it up as much as you wish ( the difficulty is the text "Miaou") and is usually a hit with any age group. While it doesn't fit the requierement of being an operatic duet, it's still by an operatic composer....

If your tenor doesn't mind abandoning his fach a bit, there's always Papageno/Papagena duet from Magic Flute. (Generally considered light hearted)

otherwise, my mind keeps spinning around the lyric to dramatic repertory. sorry, it's just something I'm stuck with.

Arias for a young soprano?

Hi, I am a junior in high school and have decided that I want a career in opera. I am a soprano with a flexible voice and a sucky lower regiter. Right now I am a heavy lyric but I have coloratura-like high notes and great flexibility so my voice teacher thinks I'll develop into a dramatic coloratura someday. At the moment I can vocalize up to an F-sharp6 but it's weak. I am at a loss for good college audition arias for young singers. This year I did Batti Batti from Don Giovani and it was comfortable and well suited for my voice even though I know it's for lighter voices. Any aria idea's would be welcome. Also, do any of you know of colleges in and around Michigan with good opera programs? I am leaning toward Oberlin Conservatory because I am visually impaired and I know that they've already had blind students before. I aloso know that they are highly competitive and it would be wise to apply other plces. Thanks,

Ellie

Arias for a young soprano?globe theater

Hi Ellie,

I am a voice teacher and teach many high-school age sopranos. I just stopped by and can't resist posting my 2 cents worth! It sounds like the light lyric repertoire would show off your voice best. First--remember that your voice has a LOT of growing to do. Don't push yourself to sing too big, too soon. The lighter Mozart rep (Batti Batti and it's companion Vedrai Carino, In Uomini from Cosi, etc) should suit you well. O Mio Babbino Caro is another. You might want to look at Rejoice Greatly from the Messiah. Monica's Waltz from the Medium may suit you as well. Your voice teacher should be able to guide you here.

As for good schools, University of Michigan has always had a wonderful program. Venturing a bit further away, Northwestern University in northern Illinois has a very strong, competitive program as well (I did my grad work there and the faculty is amazing.) Indiana has a strong program, but it is large and opportunities for undergrads to perform are more limited.

Hope this helps, best wishes and good luck!

Hi! I'm a young soprano too (sophomore in high school). I wish I could help you with your question about schools; I'm looking for a good school too and I'm currently at a loss...

From what you've said, I think we have more or less the same voice type. Some of the arias that I like to sing are:

Tornami a Vaggegiar (from Alcina by Handel)

In Uomini (from The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart)

Sorry, that's Cosi Fan Tutte, not the Marriage of Figaro

O Mio Babbino Caro (from Gianni Schicci by Puccini)

Quando Me'n Vo (from La Boheme by Puccini)

I like Batti Batti as well, but I used it so much last year that I don't think I'll be able to stand singing it for a while...

I hope at least some of these suggestions work for you; if I think of any others I'll make sure to come back and add them. Best of luck! :)

most CDs have a rather thick booklet, with the text in at least 3 languages, so you can follow along with the story. As a matter of fact, it would be a good idea to read the story first, before you put the music on, since it gives you a handle on what's about to happen...

Don Giovanni isn't really a beginner's opera. I am not a beginner, and I have to admit, the third time around, I had trouble staying awake through it. It is darker and does not suit all tastes. If you like Mozart, and if you like something lighter, then consider The Magic Flute. I don't have a dvd to recommend--I have rented four so far, and they do not meet the perfection of seeing the Royal Opera performance, live. If they come anywhere near your area, I highly suggest trying to get a ticket for it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Pisa's Caf茅 dell'Ussero: is it a rendezvous for artist ?

In May 1845 John Ruskin prolonged his stay in Pisa in order to draw the early 15th -century Palazzo Agostini on the Lungarno, or river bank, of the Tuscan city. "There is nothing like it in Italy that I know of", he said; and, writing to his father, he added: "They have knocked a great hole in the middle to put up a shield with a red lion and a yellow cock upon it for the sign of a consul, and they have knocked another at the bottom to put up a sign of a soldier riding a horse on two legs, with inscription All'Ussero Caf茅." The sign mentioned by Ruskin was short-lived, since it was thrown into the River Arno the following year by liberal students who could not even stand the sight of that Hussar. It reminded them of Austrian rule over partitioned Italy; but the Caf茅, one of the oldest in Europe, is still there. It has been there since 1775, as attested by copies of documents, letters, and contracts exhibited on its walls, which mention the presence of a Caf茅 on the ground floor of the late-Gothic brick Palazzo Agostini in the very heart of Pisa, next door to the oldest hotel in town, the Victoria, patronised, among others, by Ruskin and Dickens, and even by British royalty. Several police reports in the local Public Records Office reveal that for over two centuries this historic Caf茅 has been the favourite resort of radical Mazzinian students and of the more open-minded dons from the nearby University, who used to convene there not only to sip a cup of coffee and play billiards, but also to discuss political issues and comment upon gazette reports on revolutionary movements in the Papal States or in the Kingdom of Naples, then under Bourbon rule, and which had been the subject of Shelley's "Ode to Liberty", or his "Sonnet on the Republic of Benevento". Contraband translations of such works of Byron as The Prophecy of Dante or The Lament of Tasso were also circulated and read in the Caf茅, and they inflamed the minds of students like F.D. Guerrazzi and Giuseppe Montanelli, who were later to play an important political r?le in the Italian Risorgimento. Other students who were to become some of the most renowned nineteenth-century lyric poets and satirists in verse, such as Giuseppe Giusti, Renato Fucini, and Giosu猫 Carducci - the first Italian to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1906 - made their first improvvisazioni in the lively atmosphere of the Caff猫 dell'Ussero, as was the case with Antonio Guadagnoli, who, according to Giacomo Leopardi, had made a fool of himself by improvising playful verses on his own long nose in the Accademia dei Lunatici, the literary salon of Madame Mason, formerly Lady Mountcashel, who had played host to Percy and Mary Shelley, and particularly to Claire Clairmont, during their stay in Pisa. By the turn of the century, this literary Caf茅 had been transformed into a Caf茅-chantant, and then into one of the first cinemas in Tuscany, only to be restored to its original function at the end of the First World War. In the twentieth century the Caff猫 dell'Ussero resumed its literary and artistic vein, and it was attended by artists like Marinetti, the founder of the Futurist Movement, Guglielmo Marconi, Charles Lindberg, opera singer Renata Tebaldi, and scores of Pisa University students, who were later to distinguish themselves in a variety of professions; some of them, such as Enrico Fermi and Carlo Rubbia, were to win the Nobel Prize, while others would become Prime Ministers or Presidents of the Republic

Ever green or evergreen?

In the Phantom of the Opera, (movie, play, soundtrack, doesn't matter) one of the songs, which I don't know the name of, has a lyric that goes "We never said our love was [ever green, evergreen] or as enchanting as the sea." Either term would make sense, but which one is it? Thanks a ton!

Ever green or evergreen?sunshine

Think of me, think of me fondly when we've said goodbye.

Remember me, once in a while, Please promise me you'll try.

When you find, that once again you long to take your heart back and be free,

If you ever find a moment, spare a thought for me.

We never said, our love was ever green, or as unchanging as the sea,

But if you can still remember, stop and think of me.

Think of all the things we've shared and seen;

Don't think about the things which might have been.

Think of me, think of me waking silent and resigned;

Imagine me, trying too hard to put you from my mind.

Recall those days, look back on all those times, think of the things we'll never do.

There will never be a day when I won't think of you.

Wake up, my love, and gaze upon me

My cup is half full but his is empty

I put back on my cap and i start headin' back

I reach into my pocket and i have a heart attack

Well as i'm diggin' deep i scream "oh no!"

There's nothin' in the pocket but a great big hole

While i was busy thinkin' if he would buy smack

The jingle in my pocket it slipped through the cracks

No one has the change and it's ******' up my head

But now i no the reason why i had to buy the thread!

Here's a rather perplexing question: When composing, which do you feel should come first? Lyric

I currently write lyrics for two different composers. The first, prefers me to write the lyrics first. The results I find, is more fluid and rhythmic. Like poetry set to music.

With the second composer, he feels the music must come first. I'm instructed as to how many syllables per line. What vowel it should end in.Where the rhyme and inner-rhyme should fall. The result is a less poetic but very dramatic piece. And every musician reading it has asked "how were you able to match syllables with notes so perfectly?"

Keep in mind that these arias are all for opera only. Please let me know if you are a musician or writer or have ever composed.

I appreciate your thoughts.

Song bird

Here's a rather perplexing question: When composing, which do you feel should come first? Lyrics or Music?concert tickets

Well, I do not compose with lyrics (yet) I hope to do so in the future when I find some poems, or words that really get me.

But when I do begin, I think that finding the words will help you better construct the song.

Most lyrical works, such as Debussy's, are created, for the most part, after the poem/lyrics are written. Debussy, like I said, was a great composer who used a lot of poems to construct his works.

Examples include, but not limited to: Beau Soir, and Clair de Lune.

Just like how composers write music for something they saw that day, they too must write about what was written beforehand.

However, you may find it difficult having to match chords and what not to the lyrics.

Overall, I think that it would be easier knowing what you are composing about, what the words are, if there are any rhyming lines. And just writing the song how the lyrics are constructed.

By the way, yes, I am a musician and composer...Just not lyrical yet (I need to find some poems that I feel passionate about.)

Hope this helps

-M?tt

Here's a rather perplexing question: When composing, which do you feel should come first? Lyrics or Music?theater seating opera theater

I play electric bass, for myself the lyrics come first. After that the music seems to fall into place.
i play guitar and I make the music first

www.jamstudio.com makes the time between the idea and the finished product SO much faster
I play guitar, bass, and piano, and in my experience both ways work equally as well. Sometimes a tune will pop into my head and I'll write music to it and later put some words to it. I also write down anything that comes to me that sounds like a good lyrics and build music around it.

Honestly though, I have a feeling the greatest music writers ever, from McCartney to Mozart, could probably have both aspects come to them as they go. I know sometimes when I'm about to drift off to sleep a song will just pop into my head, lyrics and music. But really, neither one SHOULD come first. They are both equally intregral in the creation of great music. Whichever one gets the creative juices flowing for the particular person.
There is no answer to this question which has perplexed people since first lyrics began to be sung around the cave man Og's fire. Richard Strauss actually wrote a whole opera on the point - called 'Capriccio' It might be worth seeing if you could borrow a copy and listen to the words - and the music.
I feel the lyric should come first. Good composers should always be able to fit the words to a suitable melody. But I guess it depends on the emphasis. I don't know much about operas, so I won't comment specifically on that, but if you want to emphasize the words and tell a story out of the words, then write the lyrics first. Emphasis on music, then music first.

I'm a flute player, and personally, I find it really hard to write lyrics to music. I usually just compose tunes, but I would write out the lyrics first if I was composing.

So I guess it all depends on when to use what.

Crazy and utterly pointless question.?

I was listening to a techno remix of the Phantom of the Opera, and it occured to me that the lyrics make it sound like the Phantom is a metaphor for god. Any ideas? XD

Not sure about that, but it was written by a guy who liked christian themes.

I just saw Wicked and thought it was an athiest themed musical with the wizard representing God so who knows!

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:3-12

Does anyone know this song???

I randomly heard in on the radio one day...not sure who sings it, what it is called or even much of the lyrics either. But it starts out with an interesting opera voice that you might hear in those animated scary movies, then she comes on and sings "I'm sorry, so sorry" and pretty much repeats that for the chorus. Anyone have any idea?

I have an idea-is it...Tumbling Tumbleweeds...?
sounds a lil like Madonna's song and it's called Sorry - check it out
it ain't over til the fat lady sings
So Sorry is a Howie Day song, but he's a dude, maybe she's re-doing it.
not sure, but if the music is some kind of metal, might be Nightwish
The only song that I know that has the lyrics " I'm sorry -- so sorry" is a song by Maria Mena called Sorry.
hey, im pretty sure its called THEY by an artist call JEM from wales in the uk, she also did a song called 'its just a ride'
Might be Enya. Not sure of title but some of the clues fit. I'll keep checking.

I am 17 and this is my first time singing publicly. I haven't taken lessons regularly. I sing in a chorus. I mostly try to sing like the opera singers I listen too- I mimic their technique. Next year I am going dual majoring with music. Do you think I could succeed in opera someday? Constructive Criticism would be greatly appreciated.

I have taught voice since 1971. You most definitely have much good material to work with your voice! u must find the BEST vocal teacher you can - NOW - and consider studying voice at the college level. There are some factors in your voice that I cannot adequately judge because of the poor quality of the recording - but they can be repaired with a good vocal teacher. I most sincerely encourage you to continue your studies! These lists are FULL of people with NO CLUE and no effort, who prattle on about wanting to be famous - but YOU, my dear, have genuine ability and an apparent love of what you do. I sincerely wish you much luck and much success!

Do you think the last song in the Rock Opera Tommy "listening to you"? is about Jesus/God?

Watching the film again on TV it does seem the film is a commentary on religion with Roger Daltrey of the who acting out as a fake Christ like saviour who at the end is turned on by his followers. The final song with the words "following you I climb the mountains" and " on you I see the glory" and "from you I get the story" Sounds very Christian.

Tommy was written by Peter Townsend about Avatar Meher Baba who was the last incarnation of Christ who died in 1969. This is a link to one of Baba's books:

Do you think the last song in the Rock Opera Tommy "listening to you"? is about Jesus/God?extension opera theater

I love that song!! I sing it to Jesus alot!! (It's actually a gospel song from me to Him.)
I doubt it.
Tommy also realizes that all the adoration is fake and nothing but Hollywood. You did watch the end right? It is totally the opposite and a slam to religion.
Um. The whole movie is about how easily duped people are into devoting their entire lives to something blindly, based on word of mouth and marketing strategies, and their willingness to turn on it in an instant. Its very anti-religious. Its calling your people out.
I never think that, but now I think I shall switch from "I megaphone" to Tommy on my walkman.

Reminds me of Apollo, and my Will....

Tommy finds god WITHIN, sweets.

[Hope you're happy, as Phoenix Mmmm pi is now going "Tommy again."]
It's an interesting take on the movie, but that was more the doing of Ken Russell, the director. Pete Townshend, who wrote the music and the lyrics, was not a Christian, but a follower of the Asian guru Meher Baba.

Yes. idk
i love phantom of the opera!!!
when I was in college in an arts class we were told that if we went to an opera and brought in the tickets we'd get an A. So my friend and I went to the opera. I didn't know an opera would be in a language we wouldn't be able to understand (it was Italian). We sat there looking at the clothes and taking in what the audience was doing.
Ahh I here opera all the time in my house.

My parents listen to Andrea Bocelli all the time, it's beautiful. Even though I can't understand a word he's saying haha

Oh and don't even get me started on the Phantom of the Opera, I love it.

Phantom of the Opera. I enjoy the part where Christine says, "Who was that shape in the shadows? Whose is that face in the mask?" I have the sound tract to it. I have listened to it many times while decompressing from work. It is beautiful.
I was VERY LUCKY to have seen Phantom Of The Opera at the Majestic Theater on Broadway (NYC) April 27, 2006.

I am usually not a big fan of opera, but this was GREAT!

It was an amazing production! I really enjoyed it and will never forget the experience! It gave me chills!

"The Music Of The Night" was my favorite song.
I absolutely loved Pavarotti and was very sad when he died. I have heard it a thousand times, but I still get goose bumps every time I hear him sing "Nessun dorma"

AhhH! whats the name of this famous song?????

its originally an opera, but turned into a techno remix. no words, no lyrics, presumably french. she (only one singer_ has a deep voice and then high, and she goes da da da (pause) dadadada (fast), da da da da-dadadada. its a really famous song, ive heard it many times. i can't believe i don't know the name or artist. i'm sorry i don't know anything else,

but, if you have the movie, "When Nietzsche Wept" 2007, its the first song after the credits. its not the techno, but the original opera. i'll take a name or title or artist or the slightest hint. i've searched youtube, wikipedia, and google, and just about everything else. don't tell me to "just look it up on wikipedia", if it were that easy i wouldn't have bothered to waste points asking this question.

Sharon Farber is the producer of that movie's sound track, might help
If the song is played (even during the credits) on the film then the credits will contain an acknowledgment of the songs artist including the name of the song, who composed it and who performed it for the film. Just skip fwd to the credits and read the notes, if its not obvious which one it is then keep in mind that most song creditss for films are listed in order played so if the credits are the fist time it comes on it should be near the end of the list.

To find the techno song simply google (or search discogs) the name of the original peice and the word "sample"

What are some cool opera songs that a modern teenager would like?

you know like the opera songs in movies that they play when something big and exciting is taking place or like during a war scene. not just regular opera that old people listen to (sorry older people)

What are some cool opera songs that a modern teenager would like?hollywood theater

Well the person above was referring to "O fortuna" not "La". Also thats not really opera. It's the opening of a concert piece that is sometimes staged but isn't really an opera. ok...and on to opera.

Maybe the Guillaume Tell Overture (William Tell overture) by Rossini. You'd probably enjoy the Flight of the Valkyrie by Wagner. Other cool ones that are exciting are songs like Largo al factotum from the Barber of Seville (make sure you get Thomas Hampson singing it) that or the Queen of the Night aria from the Magic Flute.

Oh and your comment about old people...most of the popular opera is regular opera. A lot of opera is boring, but a lot of it is exciting...however that typically is the case that each opera has its moments...you just have to sit through it. Oh and i'm not old...just love opera.

There are a lot of places to buy opera scores on line. (Even obscure ones). I would check e-bay or Amazon (used) first because scores tend to be really expensive and you can typically find someone who has purchased it who will never use it again. Just make sure that you erase all of there markings before you start rehearsing so that you can make your own and not get confused. Congrats on the part and break a leg!
There is one of the songs here in downloads.com music section, at the bottom,

You can find some online for sale in music shopping places and maybe even in yahoo music,

here is the one I found for you. I listened to a bit, nice.

You can also try your school library (assuming you're in university or college). Ask the librarians if they have inter-university sharing also. You could borrow it from another school that way. The other option would be to schmooze an "older" voice teacher (find a soprano - what about your own teacher?) and get her copy.

But really don't sweat it, the music is pretty easy if you have an ear for contemporary music.

I'm going to assume you've Googled it though? Wow, originally written for radio. The things you learn.

Unfortunately, I never did the whole show or you could have mine but I've only old copies. Steal me, oh steal me sweet thief, for time's flight is stealing my youth... Such great music. Break a leg!!
